Rabbit series 4 Rock Rabbit

Wow how the time has flown.
I have finally managed to write my Rock Rabbit race report.
This was the last race of the series and quite an emotional one for me as an organizer, I was amazed and so grateful that the series had grown the way it has and the feedback from runners throughout has really proved to be invaluable.  As I ran out to fetch the last runners of the 20km and cross the line with them I got a lump in my throat and was a little teary eyed that this was the last race of 2015. Thank you so much to all the runners, spectators, sponsors, service providers , friends and family who believed in the series and supported us.

A wonderful turn out arrived to run Rock Rabbit 2015. The 20km was tough, technical and had a hard climb on a giant hill/ mountain. They started out on jeep track and quickly began climbing turning onto single track to run along the escarpment before descending into easy running territory. This was not for long as their next climb took them into the rocky gorge near bush camp.
The farm manager had very kindly constructed makeshift stairs to get the runners out.

The runners then began heading towards the giant climb where there was no path going up (certainly My Road Less Travelled) and the athletes had to carefully manoeuvre over rocks and small shrubs.

Once they ascended the top of the mountain there were fabulous views to be enjoyed on both the left and right sides before their technical descent. Thereafter there was an easy run into bush camp and some single track running before their next climb on the other side of the farm. Congratulations to our speedsters Tranquil Gumbo and Edwin Sesipi who ran the majority of the race together. Tranquil finished on a high after beating his rival for the first time in the series.

They finished only 18 seconds apart.  Regular podium finisher Mazu cruised in third place.

In the ladies race Elizabeth Maputi soared in to win in a time of 1:49 10 minutes ahead of second place constant podium finisher TK Ndandani. 2015’s newcomer on the trail scene Marzelle Van der Merwe bounded into third place; at 21 years old this girl is going to be force to be reckoned with.

The short distance had an extra 1.77km and was most probably the toughest of the series following the 20km route for most of the first half with technical climbs up and hard running descents. Scrambling over the river gorge and making their way toward their steep incline halfway up the mountain where they split from the 20km. This was also on a typical Nina’s road not travelled with a lot of clambering over rocks and shrubs before they joined the 20km route again descending into bush camp before their last climb to the finish.

Ryan Mathaba cruised in to win the 9.77km in a blistering time of 45 minutes with Janco Erasmus hot on his heels to take second place. His twin Henco was unfortunately injured and was unable to run but was there to support his brother. Third place belonged to Flash (nicknamed for his lightning speed as well as his love of photography).

Elzani Smith, who loves short distance running and who has certainly proved that this is her strength dominated the ladies race. She was followed by Michela Pabst in second place and third belonged to Abby Long.

Each athlete who had run 3 out of the 4 races received a rabbit series trophy and a beautiful thermal mug as a reminder of their achievements.

Talking of series we also announced our series podiums who received a cash prize as well as a series trophy. The series was worked out on a point system to allow athletes to alternate between distances. The more races run and the higher you were on the podium the more points were awarded. We allocated 50 points to a win on the long distance 45 for second place and 40 for third place etc allocating points to each of the top 10. The short distance point system was 45 for a win 40 for second etc also allocating to each of the top 10. The male race was certainly dominated by Edwin Sesipi who ran all 4 races winning 3 out 4 and ending on 195 points, second was Mazu who also ran all 4 races alternating between distances and ended on 160 points third was Tranquil Gumbo 140 who missed one of the races due to family commitments. TK Ndandani who also ran all 4 races alternating between distances dominated the female race with 180 points. Short distance runner Elzani Smith ran 3 races and came in second place with 160 points. Elizabeth Maputi bumped Nicky Booyens out of the podium with her wins on both Scrub Hare and Rock Rabbit with 100 points.
